USB adapter (USB female to USB Type C male) works fine with different types of USB storage device.

It’s a pain in the ass that Apple went all in on USB-C but there’s no getting around it. I researched several multi-port USB-A/B plus HMDI etc. to USB-C devices versus the one-to-one style adapter. I had OK luck with one multi-box but only because it came with a separate power cable so you could use more than one large power drawing device (like portable HDs). In the end these Rankie adapters seem to work best for me. There are still multiple USB-C ports on my machine so I realized the multi-box hub wasn’t really necessary. These are small and for what it’s worth discrete.
